Day in the Life: Costume Design Intern

Welcome to a day in the life of a costume design intern!

First thing I do when I wake up is make an iced latte, and breakfast of some sort. Lately, I have been obsessed with literally just fried eggs and toast (with Tony’s on top of course). Then, I get in my car and head to McComas Theatre at Mississippi State to start my work day.

We recently closed our last show, ‘Medea,’ which is a Greek tragedy about a woman scorned by her husband leaving her for a younger, richer bride. Most of my tasks this week have been cleaning up the last remnants of costumes (see: our practicum student, Sierra, helping me take clothing racks to the McComas basement).

After cleaning up a bit, I start working on our new play, ‘She Kills Monsters,’ which opens in April.

Right now, I am making a Dungeons & Dragons themed cloak for our main character Tilly. For this, I am using a commercial pattern, adjusting it to the correct length. You can see me using regular brown paper with pattern weights, and I utilize a curved and L-angle ruler.

After I finish that, I begin cutting out the fabric I need, the cloak is nearly 4 and a half feet long, so it’s a lot to work with!

When I finished cutting the fabric out, it was halfway through my shift, so I walked to a nearby P.O.D.  to grab a snack and energy drink. I, then begin sewing the cloak (no pictures, because spoilers!!)

Once 5 o’clock hits, it’s time to go home for the day.

But my day doesn’t stop there, I am working my way through reading our script for ‘She Kills Monsters,’ to get a better understanding of the characters and their personalities. Beneficial when being a costumer.

It is a Wednesday so I end my day with an Etre magazine meeting on campus. I am the creative director, so Meg, editor in chief, and I are working on picking out pictures and layouts for our magazine, ‘Entropy: Connection and Chaos,’ which releases in late April.

Thank you for following along with me today!
